How To

How to Copy and Paste Emojis on Any Device

A quick guide to copying and pasting emojis on phones, tablets, Windows, Mac, and social media apps.

Copying an emoji is a convenient way to use symbols that are difficult to find on a keyboard. The process is nearly identical on every modern device.

Copy an emoji from ChatEmoji

Start by opening the complete emoji collection or browse a specific emoji category.

  1. Find the emoji you need.
  2. Select the emoji to copy it, or open its detail page for more information.
  3. Return to your message, document, caption, or bio.
  4. Press and hold on mobile, or right-click on desktop, then choose Paste.

Keyboard shortcuts

On Windows, paste with Ctrl + V. On a Mac, use Command + V. Phones and tablets show Paste after you press and hold inside a text field.

You can also open the built-in emoji picker with Windows key + period on Windows or Control + Command + Space on many versions of macOS.

What to do if an emoji looks different

Emoji designs vary by device and app even though the underlying Unicode character is the same. A newly released emoji may appear as an empty box on an older operating system.

If that happens, update the device or choose a more widely supported alternative. Copying the emoji again will not change how an older system renders it. Browse smileys and emotion emojis for familiar alternatives.
